Associate Professor of Inorganic-Analytical Chemistry at Rhodes University

Professor Mashazi is an Associate Professor of Inorganic-Analytical Chemistry at Rhodes University in the Department of Chemistry. He also holds a Deputy Director position in the Institute for Nanotechnology Innovation at Rhodes University. Before joining Rhodes University, Professor Mashazi was employed at Mintek as a research scientist in the Advanced Materials Division in the Nanotechnology Innovation Centre (NIC). During his tenure at Mintek, Prof Mashazi was also reading towards a PhD degree which was awarded in 2012 by Rhodes University. Prof Mashazi currently leads a nanoBiosensors research group at Rhodes University The research activities of the group seeks to develop a nanostructured materials and surfaces for enhanced signal transduction. This intern allows design of highly sensitive biosensors for the ultrasensitive detection of disease biomarkers. Prof Mashazi is an established researcher with an NRF C Rating and has published closed to 80 research articles and 2 book chapters. He is an award winning researcher and recently received a Vice-Chancellor Distinguished Research Award 2021. Professor Mashazi constantly features in the Top 20 of the most productive researchers at Rhodes University according to the Rhodes University Annual Research Reports. Professor Mashazi was selected to be amongst the 26 candidates from across the Universities is South Africa for the Inaugural Department of Higher Education (DHET) Future Professors Programme (FPP) in 2020. DHET Future Professors Program is a prestigious recognition of the academic staff at universities who are poised to enter the professoriate of the Universities in South Africa. Amongst several other roles, Professor Mashazi is an Associate Editor for the South African Journal of Science and a Board Member and Associate Editor of Chemistry for the Journal of Taibah University of Science. His research interest is in designing electrochemical and optical
(bio)sensors for the detection of disease biomarkers. Prof Mashazi continues his
research at Rhodes University in the Department of Chemistry and Institute for
Nanotechnology Innovation as a Deputy Director.
