Mintek to host a symposium for ASM/Emerging Miners
Mintek in partnership with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is set to host the first symposium for Artisanal Small-Scale Miners (ASM) and Emerging Miners (EM) in South Africa.
As Mintek celebrates its 90th anniversary, the importance of not overlooking the contributions of emerging and artisanal small-scale miners to the sector is key. In recognising that these miners are the future of legal small-scale mining in South Africa, supporting and empowering them is crucial.
This one-day symposium seeks to empower the Emerging and Artisanal Small-Scale Miners with the right tools and technologies to progress in the sector. It is through such support that the future of these sectors can be elevated. This can be seen through projects like Mintek’s innovative iGoliTM in collaboration with Above Average Mines in Barberton, Mpumalanga.
Here, Mintek has been working hand-in-hand with artisanal and small-scale miners to implement processes that help extract gold in a safer, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly way using Mintek’s innovative iGoli™ process.
To kick-start this initiative of empowering and supporting these sectors, the one-day ASM/EM Symposium will take place on the 11th April 2024. It will discuss and address the challenges faced by both sectors across various stages of the mining value chain. The ASM/EM symposium will feature a panel of expert speakers who will establish a way forward on how these challenges could be mitigated for the growth and development of both sectors.
The event will also feature industry leaders and Industry bodies in general. These experts and leaders will share their expertise on mineral processing capabilities and technologies available to the sectors; funding and training opportunities; health & safety-related issues in mining; access to funding and funding approach. These being all key in ascertaining the future of legal small scale and emerging miners in South Africa.
