Welcome to Mintek

Mintek Inspires Future Scientists and Engineers in Youth Month School Outreach

In celebration of Youth Month, Mintek—South Africa’s minerals and metallurgical research organisation—took its mission beyond the lab and into the classroom, visiting three schools to ignite a passion for science and innovation among young learners. Recognising that every top scientist and engineer was once a curious young mind, Mintek’s initiative aimed to bridge the gap between education and industry, proving that early exposure to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) can shape the innovators of tomorrow.

The outreach programme saw Mintek’s experts engage with learners at Cosmo City Secondary School in Randburg, Elshadai Emmanuel Christian School in Rustenburg, and Mosupatsela Secondary School in Kagiso. Through interactive demonstrations, career discussions, and real-world applications of scientific concepts, the team brought to life the exciting possibilities within mineral processing, metallurgy, and advanced research fields vital to South Africa’s economic future.

Dr William Moloto, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Mintek, reflected on the profound impact of such initiatives. “Early interactions with professionals in STEM fields can spark curiosity, build confidence, and help learners connect their studies to real-world challenges,” he said. “It was incredibly rewarding to share my journey with these bright young minds, who showed not just enthusiasm but a genuine thirst for knowledge.”

For Dr Khuthadzo Mudzanani, an Engineer in Mintek’s Measurement and Control Division, the school visits carried personal significance. “I stand here today because of a similar programme that inspired me when I was in high school,” she shared. “To now have the chance to pay it forward—to encourage these learners to dream big and pursue STEM—is a privilege. They are the future problem-solvers our country needs.”

Educators echoed this sentiment, praising Mintek for its commitment to nurturing talent. Mr Duze Dube, a Physics teacher at Mosupatsela Secondary School, expressed heartfelt appreciation: “Programmes like this are invaluable. When learners see professionals who look like them, who started where they are now, it makes STEM careers tangible and achievable. Mintek’s efforts are planting seeds for a brighter future.”

Beyond inspiring individual learners, Mintek’s Youth Month campaign underscores a broader vision: to strengthen South Africa’s pipeline of skilled professionals in critical sectors. By demystifying STEM careers and providing relatable role models, the organisation is addressing skills shortages while empowering youth to see themselves as future leaders in science and engineering.

Mintek’s school visits serve as a reminder that investing in young minds today lays the foundation for tomorrow’s breakthroughs. After all, the scientists and engineers who will drive South Africa’s next wave of innovation are sitting in classrooms right now—and with the right guidance, their potential is limitless.
