Mintek expert Dr Mokhena publishes second book

Dr Teboho Mokhena, Principal Research Scientist and Head of the Nanomaterials Unit at Mintek, has recently unveiled his second book titled "Biomaterials as Green Flame Retardants".

This publication delves into the promising potential of biomaterials to serve as sustainable alternatives to traditional flame retardants.

“My passion for publishing is deeply rooted in my desire to share the extensive knowledge I've accumulated over the years. This passion is further fuelled by my current experiences at Mintek, where I work as a material scientist", says Mokhena.

Derived from renewable resources, these biomaterials, such as bio-based polysaccharides and phenolic compounds, offer eco-friendly alternatives. His work highlights the importance of combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to develop materials that meet the unique demands of various industries. By sharing these insights, he aims to contribute to the broader scientific community and inspire future research in his field.

“My book is complemented by the efforts of my current group, which focuses on nanostructured materials. Together, we are laying the groundwork and demonstrating the capabilities of these materials beyond the status quo. Specifically, we highlight biomaterial capabilities as green flame retardants, showcasing their innovative applications and environmental benefits", he said.
