Mintek at Mining Indaba: Advancing South Africa’s Critical Minerals Agenda
Mintek will participate in this year’s Mining Indaba as part of the South Africa Pavilion, positioning itself at the centre of discussions shaping the future of critical minerals development in South Africa and across the continent. Through targeted engagements with industry, government and investors, Mintek will be driving conversations focused on beneficiation, processing innovation, energy efficiency, and digital transformation in mining.
Mining Indaba provides a strategic platform for Mintek to advance its role as a national technology partner supporting the implementation of South Africa’s Critical Minerals Strategy. Drawing on more than 90 years of applied research and industrial problem solving, Mintek will showcase how scientific capability can be translated into commercially viable solutions that unlock value across mineral value chains.
Mintek’s presence at Mining Indaba will also emphasise its active role in emerging critical mineral value chains. This includes its participation in a landmark green hydrogen project in Limpopo, developed in partnership with the Fetakgomo Tubatse Special Economic Zone and Valterra Platinum. The project links South Africa’s platinum group metals endowment to the global energy transition, demonstrating how critical minerals can underpin new industrial pathways, decarbonisation efforts and infrastructure development.
Throughout Mining Indaba, Mintek will showcase its broad range of services, including mineral processing, metallurgy, analytical chemistry, measurement and control, digital technologies and energy solutions. These capabilities enable Mintek to support projects from early stage testwork through to industrial implementation, in partnership with both established and emerging players.
Mintek’s leadership will contribute directly to the Mining Indaba programme through a series of expert speaking engagements. Chief Executive Officer Dr Molefi Motuku will speak on the strategic importance of critical minerals and the role of applied science in building a competitive and value adding minerals economy. Executive Manager for Mineral Processing, Dr Lawrence Bbosa, will address smarter and more efficient energy use in mineral processing operations, while David Philpotts, Executive Manager for Measurement and Control, will explore the application of artificial intelligence in mining and mineral processing.
Through its participation at Mining Indaba, Mintek aims to deepen collaboration with industry and government, support investment readiness and demonstrate how South Africa’s mineral wealth can be converted into long term economic and industrial value. As the country advances its critical minerals ambitions, Mintek’s proven capability to de risk technologies, enable beneficiation and support industrial deployment positions it as a key partner in shaping a resilient and competitive mining future.
