Big Win for Mintek’s Chief Scientist at South African Women in Science Awards

 

Mintek is proud to congratulate Dr Charlotte Maserumule, Chief Scientist in the Advanced Materials Division, on her outstanding achievement in winning the 2024 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWISA) for Distinguished Young Women Researchers in the Transition Towards Innovation Economy. This prestigious accolade highlights Dr Maserumule’s commitment to advancing Mintek’s contributions to health innovation and her leadership of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI)/Mintek Nanotechnology Innovation Centre’s (NIC) biolabels unit.

Dr Maserumule, who earned her PhD in medicine from the University of Cambridge, has an impressive background in molecular immunity, molecular medicine, and biotechnology, with a strong focus on aptamer technology and nanobiotechnology. At Mintek, she has spearheaded significant advancements in biomarker discovery and the development of rapid diagnostic tests for priority diseases. Her work has led to numerous peer-reviewed publications, patents, and prototypes, solidifying her position as a leader in health product innovation and manufacturing in Africa.

Mintek's CEO, Dr Molefi Motuku, praised Dr Maserumule’s achievements, stating, “Dr Maserumule’s innovative work and leadership are a testament to the bright future of science and innovation in South Africa. Her dedication not only propels Mintek’s mission forward but also serves as an inspiration to young scientists and women in STEM fields across the nation.”

Reflecting on her journey, Dr Maserumule remarked, “This award is not just a personal achievement but a reflection of the collective efforts of those who have nurtured my career growth thus far, the contributions of the teams I am thankful to be a part of, and the supportive environment provided by Mintek, partners, industry-enablers, funders and other stakeholders. It underscores the importance of determination and collaboration in surmounting the challenges encountered along the journey of driving scientific progress and industry-facing, impactful innovation. I am honoured and excited to be selected as the winner in the 2024 SAWiSA theme category, because it aligns perfectly with two of my greatest passions: Firstly, translating what we do in the labs as scientists and researchers into tangible solutions with socioeconomic value and secondly, creating a platform for capacity development for leaders who are women in this space".
