Mining & Mineral Economics
Mintek has in-house mineral economics capabilities to develop market insights and techno-economic analyses related to mineral commodities' extraction, processing, use, recycling, and disposal. This capability enables Mintek to undertake market and sectoral analyses for external clients in the public and private sectors. Furthermore, it allows Mintek to participate in policy formulation and implementation through thought leadership engagements with government and research entities on mineral beneficiation, resource management, renewable energy, and electronic waste recycling issues.
The general mine rehabilitation industry is a niche sector within the mining industry. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) is the custodian of the closure and rehabilitation of Derelict & Ownerless mines. The DMRE aims to reduce state liability and improve the well-being, safety, and quality of life in mining communities by providing land rehabilitation solutions to formerly derelict land that can be converted into residential or arable land. To achieve this objective, Mintek assists the Department in managing the projects and delivering on the DMRE requirements of on-time delivery of projects, value addition, and positive impact on local communities.
Mintek supports the artisanal small-scale mining sector through research and development of new processes, processing technologies, and environmental management. We also produce feasibility reports, develop and adapt technologies, and provide training to individuals who can subsequently participate in gainful employment through self-employment or absorption into an existing relevant business enterprise.
