ASM/Emerging Miners Symposium

ASM/Emerging Miners Symposium

small scale mining

In July 2024, Mintek marks its 90th anniversary, join us on a special event focused on actively engaging the small-scale mining and emerging miners industry. The Mintek@90 Symposium is designed to seamlessly blend Mintek's legacy with innovative industry perspectives, creating a unique and impactful experience.

Mining stands as South Africa's economically established and resource-rich sector, contributing significantly to the nation's industrial development. However, post the 2008 financial crisis, the industry has faced challenges in regaining its allure and requires urgent revitalisation to attract essential investments.

The official recognition of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) and Emerging Miners sectors by the South African government in 1994 aimed at fostering social and economic development for historically disadvantaged South Africans. Despite interventions and support structures, challenges persist, necessitating the establishment of an 'assistance body' to promote these sectors and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders.

Mintek, a key stakeholder in the mining sector, acknowledges the need for a more efficient and effective response to the challenges faced by ASM and Emerging Miners. This response involves the creation of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) within Mintek, dedicated to the development and growth of these sectors.

The proposed CoE will formulate a strategic support programme, focusing on implementing the recently published ASM Policy. This programme encompasses strategies, technologies, processes development, and skills support and transfer.
