Mintek@90 conference, an overwhelming success!
The Mintek@90 Conference, held at the Sandton Convention Centre, was a remarkable celebration of nine decades of pioneering mineral and metallurgical innovation. This landmark event both highlighted Mintek's legacy and showcased its critical role in shaping the future of the minerals sector. The conference brought together a distinguished roster of high-level attendees, including the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe; Prof Malcolm Powell from the University of Queensland, Australia; and influential industry leaders such as Daphne Mashile-Nkosi of Kalagadi Manganese, Thungela CEO July Ndlovu, Bernard Swanepoel of Manganese Metal Company, and Rainbow Earth CEO George Bennet and Oscar van Antwerpen of Minrom.
With representation from across the mining and minerals industry, the conference provided an unparalleled platform for insights, dialogue, and strategic partnerships. Keynote speaker, Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe, praised Mintek's significant contributions to South Africa’s economic and technological development, noting, “This is a historic conference, where we not only celebrate Mintek’s 90 years of impact but also recognise the entity’s pivotal role in South Africa’s growth. Since 1934, Mintek has led the way in mineral technology innovation, research, and industry collaboration, directly contributing to the development of our mining sector.”
Mintek CEO Dr Molefi Motuku also linked this milestone to South Africa’s 30-year celebration of democracy, stating, “This occasion honours those who fought for democratic values, whose legacy we uphold by promoting innovation, inclusivity, and industry progress. Together, let us continue building a brighter future, grounded in the principles of justice and equality.”
The exhibition featured a wide array of industry representatives, from emerging technology firms to established mining leaders, fostering an environment of cross-sector collaboration. Exhibitors showcased advancements in metallurgy, energy efficiency, sustainable mining practices, and critical mineral extraction, emphasising the sector's commitment to responsible and transformative growth. Attendees explored the latest innovations in mineral processing, metallurgical techniques, and cutting-edge energy solutions, illustrating the breadth of industry expertise gathered at this commemorative event.
