“The furnace is hot, but so is your future”: Women Driving Pyrometallurgy at Mintek

“If you are curious about how metals are extracted, how furnaces work, or how raw materials become the backbone of modern technology, then pyrometallurgy is for you. It may not always be an easy path, but your perspective, ideas and determination are exactly what the field needs. The furnace is hot, but so is your future.”

These inspiring words from Grace Tawane, a Research Scientist in Mintek’s Pyrometallurgy Division, ring out as a powerful call to the next generation. They remind young women that, despite the intense heat, pressure and complexity of the field, there is ample room for their creativity and innovation. More than just encouragement, her statement is a bold invitation to a world where women are not mere visitors but trailblazers and pioneers.

This year’s Women’s Month theme, “Building Resilient Economies for All”, resonates profoundly at Mintek. Women now constitute nearly half of the organisation’s workforce, and in pyrometallurgy, they have moved from the periphery to the forefront. They are leading cutting-edge research, managing critical projects and standing at the very heart of the furnaces which were once considered the exclusive domain of men.

For Dr Madinoge Mampuru, Principal Scientist, representation in such a vital field carries significance far beyond personal achievement. “For me, it is an opportunity to have a voice in one of the critical skills sectors that contributes to the development of our economy and the advancement of humanity,” she reflects. Her vision looks forward to a future where women no longer need to fight for space in boardrooms or laboratories but confidently claim their rightful place in leadership and innovation. “I look forward to a time when women fully take their place in leadership and innovation, and I commit to show up confidently in every room where pyrometallurgy is being advanced.”

That confidence, however, does not flourish in isolation. It is fostered by mentors and role models. Senior Research Engineer Sanda Moloane shares her own experience: “Being a woman in a male dominated industry means you must back yourself up and be brave enough to show up. What is profoundly impactful is finding mentors who inspire you. I hope to be one of those mentors for future women in pyrometallurgy.” Her reflection brings out a vital truth. Progress is generational. Women already established in the field bear the responsibility to reach back and open doors for those who follow.

Representation also serves as a potent source of motivation. Research Engineer Sivanna Hanuman highlights how visibility itself can break barriers: “Pyrometallurgy is generally a male dominated field and being a woman in this industry means breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes while being unapologetically yourself. Representation matters. When people see someone they can relate to, it can be empowering.” Her experience demonstrates that empowerment is far from abstract. It is a daily reality shaped by women carving out space where others once doubted it was possible.

Against this backdrop, Mintek’s CEO, Dr Molefi Motuku, reflects on the formidable challenges women face in their pursuit of success: “On their road to success, women often carry heavier burdens, balancing professional demands with societal expectations, overcoming systemic barriers, and navigating spaces where their presence has historically been limited. This perseverance is a source of profound inspiration. It is why we hold the utmost respect for the work and dedication of women, honouring not only their professional achievements but also their strength and resilience.”

Together, these voices reveal that women at Mintek are not simply participating in pyrometallurgy but transforming it. They show how resilience is not merely about surmounting obstacles but about forging stronger institutions, pioneering innovative industries and building more inclusive economies.

As Mintek celebrates Women’s Month, the message is unmistakable. When women lead, industries evolve, workplaces are revitalised and societies grow stronger. By investing in women’s careers and championing their leadership, Mintek is shaping a future where women are not just chapters in the story but the authors of the world’s next great narrative.
