Mintek is South Africa’s national mineral research organisation, specialising in mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, applied mineral science and supporting technologies. The organisation provides research, development and technical solutions to advance the minerals sector. With more than ninety years of institutional knowledge and a footprint in over sixty countries, Mintek is recognised as a global leader in mineral and metallurgical innovation.
Mintek refers to the Council for Mineral Technology. It is an agency of the state established to conduct research, development and technology transfer in minerals and mineral-based industries.
Mintek was established to promote mineral technology and support the development of industries that rely on mineral-based products. It was created to address South Africa's need for competitive mineral technologies, greater beneficiation capacity and improved industry performance.
Mintek’s mandate is derived from the Mineral Technology Act No. 30 of 1989. The Act tasks Mintek with promoting mineral technology, transferring technology to industry, conducting research and supporting the establishment and expansion of mineral-based industries.
Mintek works across the mining, minerals processing, extractive metallurgy, advanced materials and technology sectors as well as environmental rehabilitation and small-scale mining support.
Mintek aims to lead research, development and innovation in mineral resources to support sustainable industry development, productivity and inclusive economic growth.
Mintek’s vision is to be a global leader in mineral and metallurgical innovation.
Mintek’s organisational culture is grounded in:
Excellence, Teamwork, Agility, Integrity, Respect, Innovation.
